Solar Water Heater Prices in Pakistan: What a Solar Geyser Really Costs

Two very different products are sold as “solar geysers” in Pakistan. So here are real prices, and how to buy the right one.

Every winter, gas pressure drops and geyser bills climb. So more Pakistani homes are looking at solar water heaters, and search interest jumps with every cold season.

But this market has a naming problem. Some products sold as “solar geysers” are not solar at all, and prices range from Rs 20,000 to Rs 250,000 partly because of it.

This guide covers real prices by tank size, the two collector types, and the confusions that catch buyers out.

Prices checked as of August 2026, from Pakistani retailer listings and market guides. Rates vary by city, brand and season, so confirm before you buy.

First, clear one confusion: this is not solar panels

A solar water heater does not make electricity, and it does not need solar panels. It uses thermal collectors that absorb heat directly, then stores the hot water in an insulated tank.

So there is no inverter, no battery, and no wiring into your home’s power. It heats water, and that is its whole job.

This also means no paperwork. Because nothing connects to the grid, there is no DISCO application and no net billing involvement at all.

If you want solar electricity as well, that is a separate system. Our how solar works guide covers that side.

Current solar water heater prices

Tank size Typical price Suits
100 litres Rs 65,000 – 90,000 2 – 3 people
150 litres Rs 100,000 – 120,000 3 – 4 people
200 litres Rs 120,000 – 180,000 Larger family
300 litres Rs 180,000 – 250,000 Big household, multiple bathrooms

Premium imported systems with pressurised stainless tanks sit above these ranges. Brands you will see include Haier, Gree and various importer labels.

The Rs 20,000 “solar geyser” trap

Search for solar geysers, and you will find units priced from Rs 20,000 to 65,000 by gas appliance brands. Read closely, and most are gas or electric geysers with solar-friendly branding.

They are not bad products. But they burn gas or electricity like any geyser, so they will not deliver free hot water from the sun.

A genuine solar thermal system starts around Rs 65,000 for 100 litres. If the price looks far below that, check what is actually heating the water.

Evacuated tube or flat plate

Evacuated tube collectors are the glass tubes you see on most Pakistani rooftops. They hold heat better in cold weather, so they suit northern cities and proper winters.

Flat plate collectors are simpler panels that work well in consistently sunny areas. They can cost less, but they lose more heat when temperatures drop.

For most of Punjab, KP and Islamabad, evacuated tubes are the safer pick. Since winter is exactly when you need the heat, buy for your coldest month.

Does the water stay hot at night?

Yes, if the tank is decent. The insulated tank holds heat overnight, so morning showers run off yesterday’s sunshine.

But cloudy spells do reduce output, though evacuated tubes cope better than most buyers expect. Many systems include a small electric backup element for long grey stretches.

What it saves, honestly

A family running an electric or gas geyser through winter can spend several thousand rupees a month on hot water alone. A solar heater cuts most of that to zero.

Sellers quote savings up to Rs 5,000 a month in season. So a Rs 100,000 to 150,000 system typically recovers its cost within a few winters.

Two things help the maths further. These systems last well over a decade with basic care, often far longer, and they keep working through gas load-shedding.

If the upfront cost is the barrier, installment options exist. Our financing guide covers how sellers and banks structure them.

Before you buy: four practical checks

First, plan your roof. The collector and tank want prime south-facing space, so if you also run solar panels, sketch the layout before anything goes up. Our cost by size guide shows how much roof the panels themselves need.

Second, ask about the tank. Pressurised stainless steel costs more but lasts longer, and insulation quality decides your night-time hot water.

Third, get the warranty in writing. Good systems carry 5 to 10 years on the tank and 10 to 15 on the collectors.

Fourth, check the installer’s work, not just the unit. Mounting angle and pipe insulation change real performance, and our installer guide covers how to judge the firm.

Questions to ask before you pay

  • Is this a true solar thermal system, or a gas or electric geyser with solar branding?
  • Evacuated tube or flat plate, and why for my city?
  • What tank material and insulation, and is it pressurised?
  • What warranty on the tank and collectors, in writing?
  • Does the quote include installation, piping and any backup element?
  • Where exactly on my roof will it sit?

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a solar water heater in Pakistan?

A 100-litre system costs Rs 65,000 to 90,000, a 200-litre runs Rs 120,000 to 180,000, and a 300-litre reaches Rs 180,000 to 250,000. Premium imported systems cost more.

Does a solar geyser need solar panels or electricity?

No. A solar water heater uses thermal collectors that absorb heat directly, so it needs no panels, inverter or wiring. Some units include a small electric backup element for cloudy spells.

Which is better in Pakistan, evacuated tube or flat plate?

Evacuated tubes for most buyers, since they hold heat far better in winter, which is when you need hot water most. Flat plates suit consistently warm, sunny areas.

What size solar water heater does my family need?

Roughly 100 to 150 litres for 2 to 4 people, and 200 to 300 litres for larger households or homes with several bathrooms. Buy for your winter usage, not your summer one.

Does a solar water heater work in winter and on cloudy days?

Yes, though output drops in heavy cloud. Evacuated tube systems are built for cold weather, and many units include an electric backup element for long grey stretches.

Does the water stay hot at night?

Yes. The insulated storage tank holds heat overnight, so morning water runs warm from the previous day’s sunshine. Tank insulation quality decides how well.

How long does a solar water heater last?

Well over a decade with basic care, and often 20 years or more. Warranties typically run 5 to 10 years on the tank and 10 to 15 on the collectors.

How much does a solar geyser save compared to gas or electric?

Winter hot water can cost a family several thousand rupees a month on gas or electricity. Sellers quote savings up to Rs 5,000 monthly in season, so systems typically pay back within a few winters.

Are the cheap Rs 20,000 to 60,000 solar geysers the same thing?

Usually not. Most units in that range are gas or electric geysers with solar-friendly branding. A genuine solar thermal system starts around Rs 65,000 for 100 litres.

Do I need DISCO approval or net billing for a solar water heater?

No. A solar water heater never connects to the grid, so there is no application, no approval and no net billing involved. It simply heats water on your roof.
